ATN network Lifelines competition 2024

Pitch your interdisciplinary research idea

We are happy to announce that the ATN network is invited to join a Lifelines competition. The most innovative research idea wins one year free data access again.This is your chance to expand your research with population data. We hope to inspire you with our treasure trove on data and  kick start your research. Do not hesitate and pitch your research idea. We are looking forward to your application!

Who can apply?

  • Master students (HBO/WO)
  • Junior researcher (PhD students or within 3 years of obtaining PhD degree)
  • Studying/working at the following institutes: Hanze, NHL Stenden,
  • University of Groningen, University Medical Center Groningen; when in doubt: ask us!
  • Student or PhD are accompanied with a supervisor and are embedding in the institute for at least 12 months after the start of the project

How do you apply?

  • Pitch your research idea to us by filling in the application form. You may request a form online here: Start your application › Lifelines, please tick the box “I want to join the Lifelines competition 2024” 
  • We would appreciate a motivational statement on why this particular idea is innovative and how it will impact more healthy years! You can include your motivation in the application form 
  • For the ATN network Lifelines competition you can apply for the available data collected in the three waves, including COVID-19 data and SNP data (GWAS collection). Additional data collections, like omics, linkage projects and applications for samples are not included in this competition.
  • Submit your form directly to the Lifelines Research Office
  • There is no need to submit a data selection via the catalogue yet (but please take a look to check if we have the required data available, and describe broadly what you will need for your research in the application form)

Who chooses the winners?

Aletta Researchers Brigit Toebes and Nienke Schripsema together with Lifelines reviewers Bas Bolmer and Ilse Broeders will evaluate the submissions and will select the winning research project.

What are the main criteria?

  • A proposal should contain an original, innovative research idea which is sure to have an impact on more healthy years.
  • A proposal that relates to the Aletta network 2024 topics has an advantage; future proof health systems, technology for public health, mental health, healthy living environment
  • A proposal should make the best possible use of our wide variety in data (including questionnaires, measurements, and sample results)
  • Multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary research has an advantage
    Intergenerational research has an advantage

What is our collaborative contribution to more healthy years?

  • Lifelines provides one research project with one year free data access for two users: the junior researcher and supervisor, including one year worth of supportive data services. The data access for the junior researcher and supervisor is personal so cannot be claimed by other project members.
  • Candidates will obtain their supervision and infrastructural embedding from the research institute at which they are employed
  • Winners will be requested to give a presentation at the ATN Network/Lifelines about their results
  • All candidates agree that photographic/video material of the awards ceremony and the winning proposals will be shared on the Lifelines media channels

Timeline

  • June 20th 2024: Launce ATN network Lifelines competition
  • July (exact date will follow): Extra session on Lifelines study design and instructions
  • September 1st 2024: application deadline
  • October 10th 2024: announcement of the winner during Lifelines and Aletta community event
  • December 1st 2024 - April 1st 2025: start data access for winning research project
