In the Netherlands, no registry of how many people have visual impairment exists. Estimates on the prevalence of visual impairment range from 150,000 to 400,000, depending on sources and definitions. Based on representative databases, including Lifelines, this study aims to 1) accurately estimate the current prevalence of visual impairment and blindness among adults In the Netherlands, and 2) estimate to what extent the prevalence and number of people with a visual impairment will change in the next two decades, up to 2040, taking aging and structure of the population into account. These more accurate estimates will guide future healthcare policy.
