It is estimated 40% of dementia cases can be attributed to modifiable risk factors such as physical inactivity, smoking and obesity; therefore 60% remains unknown. Sleep characteristics have been linked to cognitive functioning, but there is little evidence about the association between long-lasting, various, sleep characteristics and (accelerated) cognitive decline and dementia. In addition we will disentangle the role of psychosocial stress. This project will focus on the longitudinal association between sleep and psychosocial stress and (accelerated) cognitive decline and dementia. This knowledge will help to develop guidelines for dementia risk reduction.
