Screening tests look for cancer before symptoms appear. Currently, only 3 types of cancer—colorectal, breast, and cervical, have recommended screening tests that can identify cancer earlier. Most other cancers, like pancreatic and ovarian, do not show symptoms early and are often diagnosed at a later stage. When cancer is diagnosed early, before it has time to spread, the overall 5-year cancer-specific survival rate is higher than when cancer is diagnosed late. The newest technology test looks for cell-free DNA and identifies whether it comes from healthy or cancer cells for early cancer detection, and can potentially a method for early cancer detection.
