People with early-stage kidney disease are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. When kidney function is reduced, phosphate levels in the blood increases, resulting in vascular calcification. Calcified arteries are stiffer and prone to rupture, increasing the risk of heart failure and cardiac infarctions. Early prevention of vascular calcification is therefore essential to protect the kidneys and heart. In this research project, our aim is to show that an anti-inflammatory diet can prevent vascular calcification in patients with early stages of kidney disease. We will provide insights in the risk factors of vascular calcification and potential preventive role of nutrition.
